Back when I once wandered with saltwater in my hair and a sunburnt nose on the sun-kissed beaches of Honolulu, I stumbled upon one of the most unique beer experiences I've ever had. It happened at a bar called Off The Wall Craft Beer & Wine, tucked into the South Shore Market in the Kaka'ako district – a so-called self-serve taproom that lets you be your own bartender! 🍻
How it actually works
Can you picture the chaos of a room full of Norwegians pouring their own beer? What a thought! At Off The Wall you're handed a microchip-enabled card at the door, and you're met by a wall lined with taps – around 16 to 24 of them, mostly local Hawaiian craft beer, alongside a handful of wines, hard cider and even kombucha. Each tap has its own sensor. Hold your card up to it and it pours the drink you want, charged by the ounce, and you settle up on the way out based on how much you've actually drunk over the evening – not a flat rate, not a guess. Beer enthusiasts can experiment, mix and match, or just enjoy a local pint with a good head on it. The lineup rotates constantly and leans hard into Hawaii's own breweries – names like Aloha Beer Co., Island Brewing Co. and Big Island Brewhaus showed up regularly on the wall when I was there.
The food menu, if you're wondering, leans South American rather than the poke-and-plate-lunch you might expect in Honolulu – empanadas, ahi tacos, chimichurri wings, loaded fries. Worth ordering something while you drink your way along the wall.

As I sipped a lively IPA and watched the waves roll in, I thought: "Could this idyll ever reach the Norwegian fjords?"
Now, even though the idea is refreshing (literally!), we all know how strict Norway's alcohol laws are. To be able to walk into a bar in Oslo and pour your own beer? It sounds like a dream... or maybe a nightmare for some. Norwegian alcohol law (alkoholloven) requires serving staff to actively monitor and control how much each guest is served, partly to prevent over-serving – a self-pour wall where the tap simply keeps flowing as long as your card has credit would need some serious rethinking, or at minimum a system that hard-caps pours per visit, to have any chance of clearing Norwegian regulation. Picture Kari trying to fill her glass but ending up creating a beer fountain because she can't shut off the tap. Or Uncle Ronny insisting he's only had "one little glass" – even though his glass holds a litre.
Self-pour is actually spreading, just not here yet
Here's the thing – Off The Wall isn't some one-off novelty. Self-pour taprooms using this exact microchip-card format have quietly become their own small category across the US over the last decade, popular precisely because they let smaller local breweries get taps in front of customers without needing a full bar staff to manage them. It's a format built around choice and low commitment – order a 2-ounce taste of something weird before committing to a full pour, the way you might at a wine tasting.
So, we've got these "pour-it-yourself" bars like Off The Wall in Hawaii, right? How fabulous is that? But here comes the burning question: can we make it happen in Norway? Maybe, with a few loopholes in Norwegian law and a burning entrepreneurial spirit, one of you could pull it off! Or maybe we'll just carry the memories from Hawaii with us and dream of the day we can pour our own lager under the Norwegian midnight sun.
